Nowadays it is not just a case of picking a diet that appeals to you, as there are so many other factors to take into account. For example some are suited to people with specific health issues, others to certain lifestyles, while others still are a diet and lifestyle change all in one and designed to be followed for the rest of your life. One diet in this category is called the Stone Age diet. Followers of this regime believe that it not only helps a person to lose weight but can also reduce the risk or symptoms of many common medical conditions and diseases.
The Theory of the Stone Age Diet
Certain products in modern diets are actually poisonous until they are cooked. Things such as grains, some dairy products and certain vegetables (including potatoes) can cause a person to become ill if eaten in their raw state. The Stone Age diet believes that these products tax our bodies over time, even in their processed state, and so the idea is to go back to the eating habits of a much simpler time, i.e. the Stone Age people.
So you need to use your imagination and pretend to be a caveman/woman wandering through the wilderness. For various reasons, you will only want to stay in one spot for a day or so at any one time. During this time you need to replenish your food supplies so what would you look for? Firstly you would search out any nuts, berries, fruits, root vegetables, etc in the immediate vicinity. You would then set traps for fish in rivers and lakes, set other traps within the forest to catch game and even hunt out nests to find eggs. There are no such things as salt, flavourings, additives, sugar, etc. You would also not be dragging any farm animals alongside you during your journey.
Foods Allowed and Foods to Avoid
Using the above information as the basis of your meal plan you will find that there are still a lot of foods that you can eat. Lean meats, eggs, fish, fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, etc. Anything that could reasonably be found in a forest that is not pre-packaged or processed. Also keep in mind that the Stone Age people utilised everything that they gathered or hunted, so organs such as liver, heart and kidneys would also have been eaten and are encouraged on the Stone Age diet. Foods to avoid are any grains and pulses, sugar, salt, dairy products, potatoes, processed and fast food, etc. Basically anything that you would not find in a forest you can't eat.
As mentioned above, the Stone Age diet is meant to be a lifestyle change and not just to lose weight. Followers believe that people on the Stone Age diet have a much lower risk of developing common illnesses and diseases. It is also believed that if you already suffer from things such as diabetes, arthritis, ADHD, etc. it can reduce the symptoms of sufferers.
As with any diet, common sense should always be involved before a person decides to start it. If you have any medical conditions or any concerns then you should discuss the fact that you want to start the Stone Age diet with your doctor or professional dietician first.
